Well, apparently that bond is stronger than we thought. The doctor confirmed today that both Thomas and Luke have retinoblastomas too. Thomas has a large one (about the same size as Mason's) in his right eye. Luke has a few small ones in his left eye - or so we think. Luke was very squirmy for the scan. Mason has a large one in the center of his left eye and a small one on the edge.
The odds of developing retinoblastoma are very slim, the odds of all 3 having it are basically impossible. So pretty much we can almost be sure that these babies are identical. We obviously are devastated. My heart nearly shattered to pieces when I heard the news. But I am trying to put myself back together. There's no time to be broken-hearted when you have 4 beautiful boys to care for.
There appears to be some good news in all of this. Each of them only have it in one eye (so far), so now I have a new prayer I am asking you all for. Please pray that these boys will not develop retinoblastomas in their other eyes. Please pray for the doctors who will be caring for them. Please pray that the treatment will go as smoothly as possible. Please pray for benson to be able to adjust to his new life changes. And please pray for Richard and me. I know miracles do happen, and I know Heavenly Father is right by our side. We appreciate all your love and support. Friends and family are welcome to fast for us on Sunday.
We will be traveling to Toronto the beginning of next week and will meet with Dr Gallie on Wednesday. We are going to be quite the depressed spectacle on the airplane. We will update when we have more information.
Love,
Rich and Les

ReplyDeleteHi Leslie. I was directed to your blog by a friend (Kelsy Mulrooney). My little boy, Owen, has Retinoblastoma (diagnosed at 4 months and is currently 9 months old) and my husband is a Bilateral Retinoblastoma survivor. I gave Kelsy my info so she could pass it on to you, but I thought I’d read your posts and leave a comment. First of all, I want to say how sorry I am that you’re facing this trial with not only one child, but three and all at once. I will be praying for your sweet boys and your family as you go through this process. I would love to talk to you more and get you in contact with more Rb families so you can have support. I know that this is a huge shock and having someone to answer questions is always helpful. If you want to talk or need anything, please let me know. You can email me or find me on Facebook.

ReplyDeleteI am a childhood friend of your Sister-in-law Amy. I cannot get you and your boys out of my mind. My heart is hurting for your sweet family and all you are going through. It seems just impossible to be asked to bear such a load. You are strong, Miracles happy every day. I have been the recipient of many. I will be fasting and praying this Sunday for you to have not one, not two, but three miracles come your way. I know it can happen. I just know it.

ReplyDeleteDear Richard and Leslie,
ReplyDeleteI'm the mom of a 17 year old bilateral Rb daughter. My son-in-law pointed your story out to me. I'm happy to read of your gratitude, that's how I feel about my daughter! How thankful I am for modern medicine, retinoblastoma is 99% curable when caught early, like it has been with your sons. My daughter has a prosthetic eye and it's beautiful. If you want to talk or ask questions, there's a support group on Facebook, there's also Daisy'e Eye Cancer Foundation (I think in Canada) that Rb parents can join. And feel free to contact me bn52@yahoo.com. My family and I will be thinking about you and praying for you. What a special family you have.
Hi Leslie, My Name Is Felicia & My Son Xavier Is A Cancer Survivor, He Had Rhabdomyosarcoma In His Bladder. Right Now It May Seem Like There Is No Light At The End Of The Tunnel, But I Promise There Is. Please You Ever Need Someone To Talk To You Can Email Me At Fela1207@gmail.com. It Helps To Have Other Cancer Moms To Talk To.
ReplyDeleteI just found this site, you all are so brave and so fortunate to have the Lord's help in all of these trails. What a tremendous blessing to have four of Heavenly Father's sons given to you to care for as they sojourn in this earth life. It speaks highly of you both. As you seek for all of this medical help and it sounds like it is going very well...you might also seek a homeopath for some "natural" solutions as well. We have had marvelous solutions to my husbands cancer...stage 4 of stage 4 ten years ago. May you be blessed as you raise these precious children.
