This update is written with much gratitude.
Mason's surgery went very well. They were able to remove the 'mass' with no damage to surrounding tissue. The doctors are very encouraged by this, and they think the growth is a 'mass' (rather than a tumor) and likely non cancerous. In the beginning everything pointed to this being an Rb tumor. The fact that it isn't Rb, and that it's likely non cancerous is, huge. (huge!).
Bandages will come off tomorrow, they get to head home on Friday. There is no chemotheraphy scheduled in the near future. (!!!) Everyone feels so thankful that this situation has become a 'best case' scenario for what they were dealing with.
Pathology will be done on this growth.
Dr.'s will consult with others around the world, as this is still an 'unknown.'
Although Mason isn't out of the woods, we feel very encouraged.
For today, we feel so thankful that the growth appears to be non cancerous.
So thankful that it seems the cancer hasn't spread outside his eye cavity, afterall.
We feel indebted to outstanding doctors who have given their lives to understanding retinoblastoma.
We are thankful for the many prayers that have been offered in our behalf.
Wait just to be clear, does that mean all the chemo sessions and the bone marrow transplant and all that spreading the rest of the year and beyond Christmas time are just all canceled now? That is beyond fabulous if that is true!!!
ReplyDeleteUnless something comes back in pathology over the next few weeks stating otherwise, it looks as though the previous route (chemo, transplant, radiation) has been cancelled. All the boys still need regular checkups every few weeks to keep on top of the Rb. And, we don't really know what Mason is facing in the long run (when they figure out what this growth is). But, we are choosing to be happy and grateful today for this positive news.
DeleteI can't believe how fast this changed from "no matter what" to this! What a roller coaster!! Ahhh that is so wonderful for them. All of them.
DeleteThat is amazing!!!!!!! What a huge sigh of relief you must all be feeling right now!
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts for these beautifully strong boys and their family
ReplyDeleteBest news yet! Let us know when you are back at HSC. We will see you then. May The Lord continue to bless you and the rest of the family.
ReplyDeleteFantastic news! Thank God! Will keep praying for all the boys to be completely cancer free.
ReplyDeleteCould not have imagined such wonderful, hopeful news! Happy tears today! Prayers still coming!
ReplyDeleteSuch great news! Richard and Leslie must be so relieved! Keeping them and the boys in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteSo wonderful to read a positive update! I am so happy for everyone that this mass appears to be non-cancerous and that future chemo is cancelled for now. I can't even imagine the weight that must have been lifted off Leslie and Richard's shoulders today. Hopefully this is a sign of more positive news to come.
ReplyDeleteGreat news indeed! Absolutely thrive in the positive. There have been too too many updates & days without. Continued prayers for strength & more good to come. Safe travels home.
